"May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through!"
- Author Unknown -

A word from Lars

“Our winter was dry and warm, which was a bit of a worry, but the unseasonably cold and wet spring seems to have made up for it. The vines are looking great, flowering was successful and the fruit is developing nice and slow.
The entire year of vineyard nurturing and grooming is coming to an end now and we are looking forward to the upcoming harvest. Christmas and New Year will give our team the break they deserve to gather strength for the main season.
Wishing you all a relaxing and blessed Christmas season as well as a happy New Year.”

Wine ...

Winemaker Brad Paton recently had a whistle stop trip to America. Meeting people, doing wine tastings and spreading the word about Buitenverwachting’s great wines.
He spent most of his time in Boston and New York City and State and loved it he found the market fascinating with loads of diversity and loads of potential for their wines.

The Americans had great difficulty pronouncing 'Buitenverwachting' but loved the wine! He returned full of enthusiasm and inspiration... rarin’ to go.

After a couple of weeks in the Cellar, it was off to Durban for the Mercury Wine Week where Nicola Jenvey had this to say...

Independent On Line Natal Mercury 29.11.11
The Buitenverwachting G 2010 (double gold) impressed during this year’s Mercury Wine Week and is another one that will break down boundaries for its varietal, namely gewürztraminer. A wooded wine, it also bursts with honeysuckle and blossoms, but has been fermented bone-dry for an intensity that will leave the senses reeling.

We all love Brad’s Blends and he loves making them!
He won Double Gold at Veritas for his Red Blend Rough Diamond 06 and his G 2010.
Maximus, G and the very popular Batavia are all available at the Cellar.

Word is that he has been making a new white blend which is as yet unnamed... It is a Chenin and Semillon blend; fermented and matured for a 15 months in French Oak. It was bottled in May and is maturing in the Bottle Maturation Cellar along with the Hussey’s Vlei Sauvignon Blanc 2011.

Meet the staff ...

Elsie Meyer is a widow, she was born in Wellington and grew up in Stellenbosch; her first job was in Cape Town where she met her husband. She has 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren.
She started her career at Buitenverwachting working as Assistant Housekeeper in the Manor House which at that time was the home of the Farm Manager. It wasn’t long before her potential was realized and she joined the staff at the Restaurant as a Bartender; twenty three years later, she rules the roost in the restaurant and is the Bar Manager a position she fills with aplomb. She has done a course as a Barista and definitely makes the best coffee in town.

An extraordinary, loyal and warm hearted person, Elsie has worked for Buitenverwachting since 1988... When asked if she has received the gold watch yet, she just giggles.
Chatting to her, it soon becomes obvious that Buitenverwachting is her life. She absolutely adores Chef/Patron Edgar Osojnik, her respect for him is tangible, Elsie says, “I love my job, if I didn’t love it, I wouldn’t still be here. This is my place!” She lives in the Village on the farm during the week and goes home to her house in Eerste River when she has 2 days off.
Her memories are of milestones in the lives of Edgar and owner Lars Maack. She feels she belongs and certainly knows the history of the farm as well as the restaurant. She is loved by staff and guests alike, her twinkling eyes are an indication of her keen sense of humour.
Elsie is a testament to the amazing ‘work ethic’ at Buitenverwachting.
