"Few will have the greatness to bend history; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation ... It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is thus shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."
- Robert Kennedy -

The story of a Constantia Farm

The first thing the Muellers did after buying the historic but run down farm Buitenverwachting in 1981 was to build 28 beautiful ‘worker houses’ which were built to look like a Swiss village, followed shortly thereafter by a soil and climate analysis. Location for plantings and suitable cultivars were next on the programme. Vines were planted over 100 hectares. A full history of the farm can be seen at www.buitenverwachting.co.za.

The first harvest of 100 tons of grapes was in 1985 and exceeded all expectations.

Son Lars Maack took over the management of the farm in 1991. His focus was and is on transforming Buitenverwachting into a financially viable wine-producing farm with a happy, healthy and efficient staff. He is also enthusiastic about endorsing South African culture and heritage.

One of the people who work on the farm in administration said; “My family moved to Buitenverwachting when I was 13 years old and my father got a position as Vineyard Supervisor. It was heaven! There was a social worker to look into our needs, my schooling was paid for, I took music lessons and we went on outings, one which I particularly enjoyed was a visit to the Opera!” Her enthusiasm was palpable ...

A special human being ...
Cellarmaster Hermann Kirschbaum

Chatting to Cellarmaster Hermann the other day, your scribe found out why he has a glass on his business card.

He hadn’t long been with Buitenverwachting back in 1993 when the Society for the Blind approached Buitenverwachting to sponsor a Symposium they were holding to highlight the plight of the Blind. Buitenverwachting agreed and special labels in Braille were attached to the neck of the bottles. While in the process of discussing this exercise he, Paul Opperman and Ian Saunders came up with the idea of starting a Wine Club for partially sighted people.

A get together in Buitenverwachting’s Tasting Room was arranged. The first wine tasting evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Hermann had a project in mind (being quite selfish) which was that visually impaired people might make better tasters than sighted people. The idea fascinated him. It was decided to hold a ‘getting to know wine better’ evening once per month on a regular basis.

The Club was later called Wine Insight / Wine In Sight and is still functioning. Hermann hosted evenings for more or less 6 years in which a wide variety of wines both local and international were tasted and discussed. Wines and wine-making were talked about in depth for example the difference between a dry and a sweet wine; tasting with different foods which affect the flavour and so on.

After the initial training Hermann felt that they could stand on their own in the world of wine and withdrew but still attends most tastings and is also hosts one or two per year.

There are still educational tastings for the group hosted at Buitenverwachting for get-togethers. A variety of Winemakers host these Educationals. People come from as far afield as Stellenbosch and Somerset West to attend.

One of his most treasured possessions is a hand blown Wine Glass made by Glassblower David Reade from Worcester. The exquisite glass was presented to Hermann by the group in appreciation for all he had done for them. It has two Blue Chips inserted in the stem to represent eyes, the ‘eyes’ were inserted because he had helped them to see the world of wine. Hermann says “this is the nicest gift I have ever received”.

The Rotary Club of Constantia honoured him by presenting him with an award for Vocational Service to the Community of Constantia and Environs. Modestly Hermann still doesn’t know why? He says it was a project to prove something to himself...

He believes that maybe it was more deserved for his insight into the fact that Blind people make good tasters. What do you think?
