“The harvest is safely in the cellar, wines fermented dry and we are now busy blending, which is probably the most rewarding part of the year. The Sauvignon blanc 2012 is looking exceptional and with more vineyards in production, we have a greater choice of top wines for our final blend.
   
We are also busy with a project that should be finalised by September. The new building for this project is in its final phase. Expect more info on this in our next news letter.”

Following the success of the celebration of Christmas in June at Buitenverwachting Restaurant for the first time last year, Chef/Patron Edgar Osojnik is going to make it even more fun this year!

The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show is South Africa’s premier wine competition that recognises the top local wines and winemakers and honours excellence in the wine industry.
   
A top panel of local and international judges awarded Buitenverwachting’s Husseys Vlei Sauvignon Blanc 2011 a Gold Medal.
  
In an interview with Cathy Marston for Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show’s ICON GUIDE Brad Paton said:
  

“We don’t go for that ‘fruity-tooty on the nose’ style of wine” declares winemaker Brad Paton. “Our wines seem much quieter initially, but then they become a lot richer and more elegant on the palate. But this is definitely a wine you don’t forget easily.” Husseys Vlei is a single vineyard situated on the slopes of Table Mountain, around the farm’s dam. According to Brad, the combination of soils – Decomposed Granite, Tukulu and Sweetwater – are what make the wine so special, along with the high altitude of the vineyard which cools the grapes at night, allowing for long, slow ripening. Tank-fermentation, followed by lees contact for six months, has given the wine additional richness and for the first time this year, the release has been delayed to give the wine more time to develop in bottle. “Buitenverwachting’s wines always perform well a year or so down the track, and we just felt that we should allow this one a few extra months bottle age to give it the chance to show itself properly” explains Brad. “And 2011 was such a beautiful vintage, especially for the whites. I think you can taste that in this wine.”

Events & Conferences ...
  

The most fabulous special occasions are celebrated at Buitenverwachting. Yolanda Osojnik is an organiser par excellence, her flair for the unusual and organisation is legendary as attested to by many satisfied customers.
  
Yolanda tells us that all conferences arranged by the end of October are available at a special rate. She has also arranged special rates for up country visitors with local five star guest houses.
  
Asked about any stand out functions she has arranged recently, she mentioned a wedding that she organised in 24 hours! Quite an achievement!

Meet the staff ...
  

Meet Yolande Petersen who grew up on the farm. Both her parents work at Buitenverwachting and she attended the Constantia Primary School and Wynberg High. She says “Buitenverwachting is one of the best farms to live and work on. We all feel very safe and secure here, the relationship between the bosses and the labourers is fantastic. You can ask Lars for anything within reason and he doesn’t ever say no!”
  
It was whilst studying accounting at Intec College that she started working flexi time in Buitenverwachting’s Cellar for pocket money. She heard that there was an opening for a waitron in the Restaurant and applied. She started as a runner and is now a Head Waitron.

  
She loves people and attributes her success to her intrinsic respect for others and that she loves what she does. Recently married she has just bought her first car, a Citroen C2 and is very excited and proud of this!

The Tasting Room ...
     
The Tasting Room has been opened to the beautiful Courtyard with its soothing fountain and lovely gardens. Comfortable seating invites you to relax and taste the elegant wines.
   
Wine Tasting is free and for those that feel peckish Winzer Platters, Cheese Platters and Tapas are available when the Restaurant is open …
  
   

Tapas is served on boards designed by Edgar and pricing starts at R99 for 3 courses. Daily selections of Tapas are displayed on a blackboard from which guests can make their choice.
   
Winzer Platters are available for R75 these comprise a selection of imported cold meats with a selection of local cheeses, grapes, nuts and preserves.
  
Cheese Platters are R75 and offer a selection of local cheeses served with preserves and biscuits.
  
Tasting Room is Open: Monday – Friday 09h00 to 17h00
Saturday 10h00 to 15h00
  
Not open on Sunday or Public Holidays.
