"I have enjoyed great health at a great age because every day since I can
remember I have consumed a bottle of wine except when I have not felt well.
Then I have consumed two bottles."

- A Bishop of Seville

Buitenverwachting was part of the original Constantia Estate founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel. This beautiful farm, situated on the east-facing slopes of the Constantiaberg, close to Cape Town and only kilometres away from False Bay is renowned for its elegant wines.

After years of successful wine production this magnificent property had fallen into a state of neglect and disrepair. The Mueller family purchased the farm in 1982 and set about restoring and improving it. A full history can be seen here.

The first harvest of 100 tons of grapes was in 1985 and exceeded all expectations.

Son Lars Maack took over the management of the farm in 1991. His focus was and is on transforming Buitenverwachting into a financially viable wine-producing farm with a happy, healthy and efficient staff. He is also enthusiastic about endorsing South African culture and heritage.

The farm uses a variety of holistic farming practices and a portion of the farm has been dedicated to preserving indigenous flora and fauna.

Buitenverwachting is also home to one of South Africa’s top restaurants.

Lars is constantly considering ways of improving the Buitenverwachting experience for guests. This winter has been a busy one in which he has transformed the feel of the Tasting Room, the Courtyard area and added a first-class Coffee Shop and Deli. His innovative ideas have become reality! An outstanding experience awaits.

A word from Lars

“Planning a winery’s planting program requires a bit of a crystal ball, in order to predict the future. Our planting program covers a time period of 20 years.

We have identified Sauvignon Blanc as the ideal varietal for our unique terroir. The latest Veritas results, Trophy Wine Show as well as the Parker ratings confirm this decision. Also our popular Buiten Blanc (predominantly Sauvignon Blanc) achieved a respectable Silver medal at Veritas.”

Wine and more

Wine Spectator Insider rated Buitenverwachting Chardonnay 2011 – 92 points
Ripe, sleek and stylish, with a persimmon and toasted hazelnut frame to the core of creamed Jonagold apple, brioche, verbena and pear flavors. The long, creamy finish has nicely embedded acidity. Distinctive and enticing. Drink now through 2014. - J.M.

Cellar Master Hermann Kirschbaum starts every morning at 07h00 with a get-together of Cellar staff which begins with a motivational reading and then a discussion of the goals for the day. He says “we are a family here”. It is evident that the staff are happy and motivated and the exceptional quality of the wine produced is without question.

Hermann says that it was a positive vintage with good quality grapes this year. Volume is up and with the new vineyards in the blends it has given them more scope. Quality is good.
