A word from Lars

"A sure sign of Spring is not only our flowering vineyards and the promising outlook for the 2014 harvest, but also our resident Eagle Owls. Every year they raise their young in the oak in front of our Coffee Bloc and receive all the attention.
The imported bottles for our Dessert Wine "1769" have just arrived and we will have the "sweetie" released by mid December, just in time for the Festive season.
Wishing you a blessed Christmas and amazing New Year".

The restaurant was renovated and restored to reflect the true farming character of Buitenverwachting. It's newly glassed in terrace allows for uninterrupted views over the farms vineyards and its spectacular mountains (classified as World Heritage Site). New oak tables and servers as well as comfortable chairs reflect the casual character of the terrace.
The menu is categorised in four sections with each section offering around five dishes:
'some classics' represent fresh and easy dishes such as starters and the most popular dishes such as Edgar's Caesars Salad or Steak Tartare
'rustic affairs' offers hearty dishes such as Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder, Fish and Chips or Chalmar Beef".
'indulge' is for those fine dining aficionados
'desserts' offers a fresh and delicious Raspberry Soufflé or for the serious chocoholic the 'Buitenverwachting Chocolate Variation' amongst other yummy treats for those who have a sweet tooth.

Front of House Manager Sonia Forssman adds that special touch to a visit.

John and Lynne Ford, Adamastor & Bacchus lunched at Buitenverwachting Restaurant recently and had this to say:

“When we go to a favourite restaurant fairly often, we want to write about it in a new way so that you may be excited enough by our description to go and try it out yourself. Buitenverwachting restaurant has been one of our haunts for several years and it has never disappointed us. Edgar Osojnik, the Executive chef, changes the menu regularly throughout the year and, over the years, has changed his style slightly to fit in with modern trends. He used to do classic food from Europe with a Germanic touch, then he tried out some nouvelle cuisine, he had a brief fling with molecular gastronomy and now he has combined the best of all these with a bit of Asia and exciting fresh local ingredients cooked seasonally, with the addition of some exotic spices and ingredients. The restaurant has the most beautiful views of the vineyards and mountains and, of course, they have access to the full range of Buitenverwachting's excellent wines to inspire them and pair with the food.

OPEN 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday

9am - 3pm Saturday

The Eggs Benedict is a favourite amongst the frequent patrons of this popular eatery; the coffee, freshly roasted and ground must be among the finest in the Western Cape. Edgar's kitchen keeps Coffee BloC well supplied with freshly baked cakes and yummy deli take outs.

The indoor outdoor flow to the garden and fountain is superb. Enjoy your fancy in comfort in the lovely garden with the sound of the soothing fountain in the background; one of the very special summer-time experiences in the Cape.

Meet the people

Cornelia Jaftha came to Buitenverwachting when her father was appointed as Foreman of the Vineyard when she was 12 years old.

After Matriculating she worked as a photographic model for a few years before joining the staff of Buitenverwachting Restaurant. It wasn't long before Lars Maack recognised her potential and asked her to run the Tasting Room.

In February this year she was appointed as Manager of Coffee BloC a job which she loves. It suits her vibrant and capable personality; she loves interacting with people. Cornelia says the Eggs Benedict and the Scones are extremely popular. She also runs Administration and Sales at Buitenverwachting.

Happily married, she has two gorgeous sons who both do well at school, the family live in the Village on the Farm. She says “It's so peaceful and tranquil and so good for the kids, I count my blessings on a daily basis”.

Yolanda says "you're right underneath the mountains; it is an oasis of beautiful countryside, close to civilisation."

Lars so enjoyed Warren Machanik's passion for coffee that he built him a roastery on Buitenverwachting. Warren says “The first critical step in producing fine coffee is to source truly world-class Arabica coffee beans.” All coffee used at Coffee BloC is roasted by Quaffee and is for sale there.

It's fascinating to chat to him, his knowledge is immense and he imports from all over the world ...

He delivers to offices and homes. Telephone 021 794 2988 or visit www.quaffee.co.za.
