“2013 is promising to be an interesting year. We started off with a dry and hot spring and the remaining summer days seem to offer colder and wet days. We used to be nervous about heat, as Sauvignon Blanc is a cool climate varietal. Reflecting on the past hot vintages such as the 2006, 2009 and 2012, the Constantia Sauvignon Blancs from the those years are rich and complex wines showing very little of those typical under ripe grassy green flavours. 2007 for instance was a cold vintage and the wines took a long time to come out of their shell.
   
So far the Sauvignon Blancs of 2013 have come in healthy, ripe and packed with flavours and we hope that we can repeat another great 2012 year. Wish us luck!”.

The Coffee BloC has fast become one of the meeting places in Constantia; it is also popular with regular visitors and tourists. The coffee is good and the freshly made pastries and breads are irresistible. Barista Wezo loves what he does and his espresso based coffee drinks hit the right spot! Coffee connoisseurs of which owner Lars Maack is one are in ‘coffee heaven’ at The Coffee BloC, one can even select one of the special blends to take home.
  
Delicious breakfasts and light lunches are also available. Incredible value; great service and mouth wateringly delicious…
   
Coffee is of world-class standard made from the highest grade beans and roasted at Buitenverwachting by Quaffee who also supply a variety of coffee machines and accessories. There is also a wide selection of decadent take-aways all from Edgar’s superb Kitchen.

         Best Sauvignon Blanc Vineyard  

His natural biodiversity methods include the introduction of Ladybirds and small Wasps to keep the virulent Mielie Bug under control. This is an organic and natural way to control the Mielie Bug which has always been a serious problem throughout vineyards in South Africa. The Mielie Bug spreads a virus which makes the leaves of the vines curl and turn red which inhibits photosynthesis and in time the ripening of the grapes. The only way to control this in the past was to use insecticides which in turn kill all the natural predators. The Ladybirds and small Wasps do this very effectively. Chemicals are used as little as possible.
  
Peter joined the staff at Buitenverwachting 16 years ago; he is a family man and his wife and 2 daughters were very happy to move into the lovely homestead on an attractive part of the farm with a stunning view of Constantia. Since joining Buiten there has been an addition to the family and son Justin who is 12 years old promises to be one of South Africa’s up and coming Rugby stars.
  
Always a farming man, the 100 hectares under his care keep him very busy and he loves it. He has just won an award for ‘Best Sauvignon Blanc Vineyard’ which has brought a prize of some very useful plants and farming equipment to the farm and a floating trophy to add to the cabinet. Peter says “I entered on the spur of the moment”. “It’s now all hands on deck for the Harvest”

Constantia Fresh Festival 2013

    
The fourth annual Constantia Fresh Festival invites the finest South African wine producers to show not just their Sauvignon Blancs, but their other wines exhibiting that all important character; freshness.
Once again Constantia Fresh explores the distinctiveness of Constantia’s fine wine, while exploring and contrasting with offerings from other regions of South Africa and the rest of the world.

   

Friday 1 March - The 2013 Constantia Fresh Festival kicks off with Jörg Pfützner of Fine Wine Events hosting a fine wine dinner alongside Peter Tempelhoff at The Cellars Hohenort in Constantia. Tempelhoff oversees the five Restaurants in The Collection by Liz McGrath.
   
Guests will be welcomed with a selection of Constantia’s Méthode Cap Classiques; Tempelhoff will prepare a five-course degustation menu paired with 16 local and international wines. Seats at the dinner are limited due to the intimate nature of the restaurant. Tickets to attend this dinner are on sale at R1500 per person.

  
Saturday 2 MarchFine Wine & Food Exhibition hosted by Buitenverwachting; wine enthusiasts will stroll the rolling lawns of Buitenverwachting sampling South Africa’s finest and freshest wines paired with canapés made by South Africa’s best chefs. An elegantly constructed braai will take place in the early evening. Tickets to this tasting are on sale at R400 per person.
